Santa Pod Easter Thunderball Weekend 2005

Many of us went up Friday night and stayed to late Sunday. Was cold, and some of us caught the sun when it briefly came out, or perhaps it was the jet car shooting out its flames.

Audi Pro Street Car
If you were side by side with this road legal car you wouldn't realise there is a supercharge V8 under the hood. Until you tried to race this thing, this could leave any car standing. The ending is mainly under the dashboard and the supercharger is in front of the engine keeping the cars looking normal from the outside. Although the wide rear tyres, roll cage and parachute gives it away.

VW Beetle Jet Car
This is a car for demonstration, although can achieve a quick 1/4 time, it was made to entertain the crowds with the flames and smoke. This car is road legal, has been MOT' ed. I guess it will make sure no one it right up your backside, if so you could char grill them.

Pro Street Cars
Cars that were road cars have roll cages fitted, wide tyres and larger engines fitted. The cortina estate is owned and driven by a friend of the club.

Funny Cars

These cars have small similarities to the original car it was based on but that's about it, the top of the car is all fibre glass which lifts up to gain access to the engine and for the driver to get in and out. These cars usually have an engine sizes of 500ci.(305ci is 5.7liter) so these are big blocks. Some run on methanol some on nitro methanol.

Rocket Bike

Solid rocket fuel and peroxide powers this bike. A jet of steam pushes the bike along.

Fireforce Jet Car

Awesome power, rated at around 10,000hp. Your average small UK car is about 60bhp. Done the quarter mile in 5.6seconds, and broke the european record while we were there going through the trap at 336mph. Power solely by the jet engine. More information can be found at Fireforce

Jet Truck

The truck didn't run down the drag strip. Happened to see it near the pits.

Dragster Bike

These bikes were fast, although a similar speed to top methanol dragsters these 1000bhp bike must take some courage to ride. It comprises of a massive engine and a guy in a superman pose holding on.

Jet Quad Bike - Michael Kooy is the driver / pilot
Quad bike designed around a jet engine. The quad is just for show, large flames and smoke. In the act he demonstrates that even when turning fully in one direction the quad carries on in a straight line.

Top Methanol Cars

These cars are like the top fuelers but not quite as powerful at 4000hp still dam quick at around 7 seconds. To knock of a couple more seconds you need to double the horsepower. Great to watch and still very loud.

Top Fuel Cars running on Nitro Methanol
These cars are the loudest things I have ever heard. You have to be there to appreciate it, the ground shakes, your eyes and ears feel like they are going to burst. Trying to hold a camera steady isn't easy when these monsters shoot past. Was chatting to a guy in the pits, these engines produce 8,000hp. The engine is connected direct to the rear axle, therefore no gear box. These have just one gear, there are 5 clutches and by using what they call a 'Cannon' chooses how much power is transferred to the wheels, gradually over the 5 seconds more and more power is delivered to the wheels. If all power was delivered on the start line the wheels and tyres would explode. By the time the car gets to the end 85% maximum power is delivered, perhaps better conditions they would let out 100%.
